雍和宫是北京市规模最大、保存最完整的藏传佛教格鲁派(黄教)寺院。明朝时,它是太监的宫房;康熙驾崩前,它一直是雍正的府邸。1722年,胤禛登基,将其升格为行宫,并于雍正三年(1725)赐名雍和宫。乾隆九年(1744),他将雍和宫主要殿宇改建为佛殿,使其正式成为藏传佛教寺庙。从此,雍和宫成为清政府管理藏传佛教事务的中心,开始了它作为连接中央政府与蒙古、西藏地方纽带作用的辉煌历史。如今,它还是中国文化交流,宗教交流的重要场所。

Temple Yonghegong(Lamasery of Harmony and Peace) is Beijing's largest and best-preserved temple for the Gelug Sect(Yellow Sect)of Tibetan Buddhism. It used to be eunuch's office in the Ming Dynasty.In year 1744,the 9-year-old Qianlong followed his mother's instruction and took into consideration his father's belief in Buddhism,the Emperor rebuilt the major halls into Buddhist ones,transforming it into a Tibetan Buddhist temple.Since then,Yonghegong had acted as the administrative center of Tibetan Buddhist affairs during the Qing Dynasty,startig its glorious history of being the link between the central government and such regions as Mongolia and Tibet.It is not only a Buddhist temple now,but also an important site for China's cultural and religious exchanges with the outside world.
