In his article "on Ru Ware", Zhang Wanli said: "thirty years ago Mr. Guo Shiwu[Guo Baochang] told me that before he undertook the firing of enamel-decorated porcelain marked "Juren Tang" for Yuan Shikai, he had selected some Jingdezhen potters and sentthem to Linruxian [in Henan province] to study Ru ware materials, in the hope that they could make someimitation Ru ware for Yuan Shikai .They brought back with them some clay from Linru, but failed to obtain anyglaze material which nowadays comes from Yuxian Yang Du objected to the idea of making imitation Ru wareon the ground that it was inauspicious, for the inauspicious of a new dynasty, to copy a Song ware which wasmade shortly before the collapsed of the [Northern] song. The idea of making imitation Ru was abandoned, andit was then decided to make copies of the enamel-decorated wares which were produced in the heyday of the Qinldynasty, and to give them the mark "Juren Tang" .That notwithstangding ,Guo Baochang was very proud ofhis idea of making imitation Ru ware, the whole business of securing clay from Linru, and the attempt to obtainglaze materials from Yuxian. If the idea had been carried out, he would have been the person responsible forthe creation of a consistently marked Ju ware.Guo Baochang remained enchanted with the idea, and could notresisted boasting about it whenever there was a gathering of friends. I believed that many of his old friendswould remember his talking about this "achievement".
