Mao Zedong was indeed a poet. Chiang did not here err:
"At the foot of the mountain flags are in sight;
Drums and horns sound from the height."
"Beacon fires send up into the sky rolling smoke that reeks,
And fog shrouds Longgang, darkening a myriad peaks."
These lines were intended for Chiang, who did not necessarily enjoy them,
But every stream and peak, every terraced field, every ridge
And every ravine of the Luoxiao Mountains was reading aloud
Mao's passionate poetry. All in the mountains, spears and swords,
Cannons and self-made guns, and even explosives in ditches
Were tinted with poetic colour, as if a strong castle
Towered in the sunlight of the Jinggang Mountains.
Chiang hadn't expected dealing with a scholarly poet
Would put him on tenterhooks, watching day and night.
One, two, three, four encircling suppressions
Caused the loss of many troops and generals. He shouted his voice hoarse,
Unable to stop even if he wished. After three changes of commander-in-chief,
He went in person to the front, almost shedding humble tears before his men.
Though incidents took place on Sept. 18 or on Jan. 28,
Though aircraft roared in the sky or tanks dashed about on land,
Chiang was resolved to pacify the interior before resisting foreign aggression
And to capture Mao Zedong despite severe curses from the nation.
