One of the most outstanding features of the Ming dynasty imperial wares is the wonderful variety of painted decorative motifs that were introduced during this time. The factors contributing to this achievement were manifold, the progressive advancements in firing technique and understanding of glaze colors, the imposing style of the ceramics made for imperial use, burgeoning market demand and the influence of the wider society. All of these combined to carry the pieces produced at the imperial kilns during the Ming, with their grand compositions painted in glaze pigments onto a white porcelain canvas, creating those exquisite porcelains in underglaze blue, wucai polychromes and doucai contrasting colors, to yet another peak in the history of Chinese ceramics.
