Usage Advice: Tobe used in children’s Chinese language classrooms overseas

Chinese Paradise is a series of children's elementary Chinese textbooks targeted at primary school students in other countries; it is a key textbook project ofHanban. Its first English edition was published in 2005, followed by asuccession of 45 language editions of the Level 1 books. At present, the serieshas been sold to more than 50 countries and areas in the world, been widelyused in primary and middle schools overseas and become the most popularoverseas children’s Chinese textbooks. Since 2013 Beijing Language and Culture University Press hasbegun to revise the published books and compile the follow-ups. The secondedition of the whole series has altogether six levels, suitable for students ofGrades 1-6 in primary schools outside of China and in international schools inChina. Each level comprises one textbook (with a CD), one workbook (with a CD),one set of word cards (for all language editions), one teacher’s book (for all languageeditions), one corresponding reader, one set of tests, and four multimediaCD-ROMs.This is Textbook 2 ofthe Swahili edition, including six units, 12 lessons. Each lesson teaches 1-2Chinese characters, about 10 new words and one basic sentence pattern. To bespecific, the contents involve interactive sentence patterns, new words,learning of Chinese characters, explanations of Chinese culture in the learner’snative language with illustrations, handicrafts, songs, stories and other gamesand activities. After finishing this book, students will be able to say a fewsimple sentences, sing some Chinese children’s songs and get some knowledgeabout Chinese culture.
About the Author
LiuFuhua is the deputy dean of College of the Humanities and InternationalLanguage College of Jilin University, whose research involves teaching of Chinese as a foreign language, international Chinese teaching materials, and international Chinese education. Ms. Liu has engaged in the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language since 1985 and has presided over several key textbook projects planned by Hanban. She has published two academic books, General Discussions on Linguistics and Chinese Pronunciation Training Course, five international Chinese textbooks and more than 30 academic papers on international Chinese education, etc.
