This Yearbook of High Technology Industry is based on the Statistics Catalogue of High Technology Industry Classification, which was published by the National Bureau of Statistics in 2002. The purposes of the Yearbook are to summarize the development and international competitive position of China's high technology industry and to facilitate the goals of the state macro administrations in formulating policy and programming in support of China's high technology industry.
The Yearbook describes the development of China's high technology industry during the period from 1995 to 2003. Statistical series for the years 1995 to 2003 include production, sales, science and technology, employment, investment, export, and relative international comparative measures of this fast-growing industry. The Yearbook should serve as a useful source for the public planning and administration sector as well as the broader business and research communities for understanding recent developments in China's high technology industry.
The Yearbook contains six parts. The first part focuses on the production and sales of high technology industry, for which the data spanning 1995 cover all independent accounting enterprises, and for 1998-2003 reporting covers all state-owned enterprises and non-state-owned enterprises with annual sales over 5 million RMB, among which data grouped by type of registration of state-owned enterprises from 1999 to 2003 covers state-owned and state-holding enterprises. The second part of the Yearbook focuses on science and technology activities in high technology enterprises, in which the statistics cover large and medium-sized enterprises. The third part focuses on employment for all included enterprises and statistics on technical personnel which are reported for only large and mediumsized enterprises. The fourth part of the Yearbook focuses on the investment of fixed assets in high technology industry, for which the data covers projects with investment in capital construction and renovation over 500, 000 RMB. The fifth part focuses on the products export of high technology industry, for which the coverage of the export data is the same as the first part and the coverage of the data of sales revenue from new products for export is the same as the second part. The sixth part focuses on international comparisons among China and the OECD countries.
The scope of this Yearbook does not cover the small-sized enterprises with annual sales under 5 million RMB.
